We’ve been keeping busy on the Harvest front (we made 8 feature announcements on the Harvest Gazette just in January alone), but all work and no play isn’t how we like to do it. So we’ve been taking some time out to talk to people about the work and our company. We did a brief interview with web design gallery, Unmatched Style:

→ UMS Interviews: Iridesco

And we’re also recently quoted in a small business article on Jim Cramer’s TheStreet.com:

→ Five Ways to Launch a Business for Less Than $100 a Month

While we were happy to contribute ideas and talk about what’s worked for us on TheStreet.com’s article, launching a business on less than $100 a month is generally not recommended.

In May of 2006, we demo’d the then-spankin’-new Harvest application to the New York Tech Meetup community. Speaking to a capacity crowd of about 500, it was a great way to get the word out about our application and to meet people who knew very well the problem we were looking to solve.

Thanks to NYC-based video sharing site, YouAre.TV, that evening’s presentation is nicely preservered for posterity. Full video after the jump.

(I’m up on stage around minute 23:00)

If you’re launching products or services relating to technology in the NY metro area, the NY Tech Meetup remains a great way to connect with people who might care.

Our friends in Hamburg, the amazing Human Empire, have launched an online store with music labels Morr Music, City Centre Offices and Karaoke Kalk. The store is humbly named, ‘A Number of Small Things‘.

I found out about Human Empire from a CD they designed for Morr Music, and about a year ago, we interviewed Jan Kruse, the founder and designer/illustrator of HE, and he explained how that name came about:

Our first idea was to build a website/world were only “good and kind” people get entrance. War lords and all the bad things and people of the real world should kept out. A kind of paradise – a human empire. It should be a place which makes people smile.

Read the rest of the interview here.

Also - Jan, along with many other talented, hand-lettering cool cats are featured in a recent book, curiously titled, Hand Job, by Michael Perry, whose work I’m envious of.

Spire, the small company that makes great laptop bags, has released a line of new courier bags. We recently got a couple of them and asked Cory Barnes about his new designs, and this is what he said,

“You’ll notice the handle is in a different location. The old handle was the most common complaint we received with the old Endo because it caused the bag to hang at an angle when you carried it. There is more padding in the bottom — if you feel the bottom you’ll see that there is foam built into the bottom of the bag, but it doesn’t go all the way across the bottom. It’s only below the laptop compartment, so this keeps the bag from being too bulky. There are also 5 additional pockets and 2 extra pen pockets. And a removable key fob.”

I enjoy listening to people like Cory talking about their products. It’s fun to notice the details, and inspiring to hear a fellow business owner having such pride, care and enthusiasm for his products. I hope Spire’s new line does well!

Oh boy, we had lunch more than two weeks ago and I just got around to post this. How do people keep up with their blog everyday? I sure can’t.

We met with the two young fellas from Barrel at Sobaya. Only in their second year of operation, and they are thriving as a design studio, starting a t-shirt company (and doing their own photo shoots), art directing a magazine, and keeping a casual wine-drinker guide. And, if you can believe it, they have more fun stuff cooking in their midtown office.

Great conversation, and great food, as you can see in the photo above.

Came across this New York Times article about FriendFeed, a new service that is reminiscent of what we were looking to achieve with SuprGlu. FF allows you to subscribe to your friends’ Internet activity, e.g. music they listened to, entries on their blogs, or photos they shared, all with the convenience of just one feed. With SuprGlu, which already had the aggregation covered, we had planned on rolling out a feature called SuprFriends, which would’ve allowed you to subscribe to your friends’ Internet “life-streams.” What prevented us from proceeding down this path was:

We were self-funding SuprGlu and it had no revenue model–and we disliked pursuing an advertising model at the time

It became really tough to scale our technology without additional funding once we had a decent userbase and a TON of data to deal with

So lacking a revenue model and being simply not interested in the venture capital (despite inquiries) because we thought VCs were evil, we decided to work on something else.

It’s not to say that a service like this would be great to have for the masses, so we’re glad someone’s working on it, two years after we tried along with the likes of PeopleFeeds (offline) or Ziki (changed business model).

Public relations is something we’ve been thinking a lot about here, so backstory aside, this post is about PR, and these guys know how to work it. The service is in closed beta and yet they managed a story in the New York Times. Since we like to de-construct what makes a good story, here are some thoughts we think makes it a compelling story despite the early stage of the product: founders are Google/Stanford alumni, service plays with top, well-known social services (YouTube, Digg, Facebook, etc.), and maybe simply good relations with the press.

Around the time when we launched SuprGlu in 2005, a writer from the magazine Business 2.0 decided to cover our service after seeing a demo and the crowd reaction at a New York Tech Meetup. The article was written after several interviews/phone calls with us, and it seemed like we were about to see ourselves in print. Unfortunately, the story did not run in the end despite having been fully written. Had we been a little wiser about PR, we would’ve pursued the matter further and presented it with even more socially relevant angles.

While it may have been an opportunity missed for us, we couldn’t be more excited about the stuff we’re working on today. We wish the FriendFeed guys well on their venture and look forward to seeing where they take their service!
